Wyoming Poised for Nuclear Power Resurgence
Laramie, WY—Wyoming stands at the forefront of a nuclear power renaissance, supported by a presidential administration committed to modernizing federal regulations for the energy sector, Governor Mark Gordon announced at the Next Frontier Energy Summit. Addressing 350 energy enthusiasts at the University of Wyoming, the governor emphasized the state’s pragmatic approach to energy innovation and its readiness to tackle rising electrical demand while decreasing carbon emissions.
Gordon highlighted a recent shift in his energy strategy from an "all-of-the-above" approach to advocating for what he calls “the best of all-of-the-above.” He believes that Wyoming offers unique opportunities for innovation, enabling the integration of renewables, fossil fuels, and advanced nuclear technologies.
Cindy Crane, CEO of utility giant PacifiCorp, reinforced this vision by announcing the company’s tentative agreement to collaborate with TerraPower on the Natrium nuclear power plant near Kemmerer. This advanced small modular reactor promises to provide reliable, low-carbon electricity while building a robust domestic nuclear supply chain and workforce.
PacifiCorp is transitioning its energy sources, converting some coal units to natural gas while exploring carbon capture technologies for remaining coal operations. Although critics argue the pace is slow, the potential for billions in investments points towards long-term job creation and economic stability for Wyoming.
Governor Gordon believes that such investments in innovative technologies are essential despite their initial costs, marking a significant step forward for the state’s energy future.
