“Jumbo”: The Record-Breaking Animated Film from Indonesia | National

Indonesian Animated Film "Jumbo" Sets Box Office Records and Eyes Global Appeal

An Indonesian animated film, "Jumbo," is making waves in Southeast Asia, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in the region with over $8 million in ticket sales. Launched in late March to coincide with the Eid holidays, "Jumbo" follows the story of Don, a large orphaned boy facing bullying. The film has become the third highest-grossing movie in Indonesian cinema history, attracting eight million viewers, according to Film Indonesia.

Director Ryan Adriandhy Halim expressed his hope that the film would inspire kindness and remind audiences that everyone deserves respect, regardless of background. The narrative features Don’s magical adventures, including a meeting with a fairy longing to reconnect with family. After an impressive opening, "Jumbo" has consistently filled theaters across Indonesia, surpassing the previous regional record set by Malaysia’s "Mechamato Movie" in 2022.

Looking ahead, "Jumbo" is set to release in over 17 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Turkey, and Mongolia, in June. Anggia Kharisma, chief content officer at Visinema Studios, hinted at potential global expansion, despite concerns about its appeal beyond Southeast Asia.

With audiences expressing hope that "Jumbo" could compete with prominent Disney productions, creator Ryan emphasizes his modest ambitions, envisioning the film as a "stepping stone" for the future of Indonesian animation.
