Locations for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Unveiled

Los Angeles will showcase its historic sports venues during the 2028 Olympics, with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium sharing the spotlight for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The Opening Ceremony will occur on July 14, 2028, and both venues will play a role, while the Closing Ceremony is set for July 30 at the Coliseum. This marks the Coliseum’s unique status as the first venue to host events across three Olympic Games, having previously done so in 1932 and 1984.

Casey Wasserman, LA28 Chairperson and President, emphasized that these venues embody Los Angeles’s rich sports history and innovative future, promising an unforgettable Olympic experience that will attract fans globally. The Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies will also take place at these venues, with the former at SoFi Stadium on August 15, 2028, and the latter at the Coliseum on August 27.

A clearer picture of the 2028 Olympics competition venues emerged recently, with over a dozen locations announced, including sites for beach volleyball, surfing, and baseball. This plan was endorsed by the International Olympic Committee after a presentation by LA28 organizers. Additional venues include BMO Stadium, the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Rose Bowl, and locations outside LA, such as Oklahoma City for canoe slalom and softball.

The 2028 Olympic medal program introduces six new mixed-gender team events, totaling 351 events—22 more than in Paris 2024. New additions include mixed events in artistic gymnastics, athletics, golf, and others, as well as the return of baseball and softball and the Olympic debut of flag football, marking a significant evolution in the Olympic Games.
