Wyoming Senate to Consider Abortion Bills Mandating Transvaginal Ultrasounds and Clinic Restrictions

Wyoming House Approves Stringent Abortion Bills Amid Controversy

Wyoming’s House of Representatives recently passed two significant bills aimed at tightening abortion regulations, prompting heated debates among lawmakers.

The first bill, HB 64, mandates that women undergo a transvaginal ultrasound no later than 48 hours before obtaining abortion medication. This legislation requires ultrasound providers to inform women about the embryo’s age, size, and to offer them the option to view or hear the heartbeat. Bill sponsor and House Speaker Chip Neiman emphasized that while he hopes the bill leads to fewer abortions, its primary intent is to enhance safety for women.

Conversely, HB 42 seeks to impose stricter requirements on facilities performing in-clinic abortions, particularly targeting the only such facility in Wyoming, located in Casper. Katherine Knutter, Executive Director of Wellspring Health Access, criticized the bill as an effort to undermine their services.

Notably, last November, a District Court ruled Wyoming’s ban on abortion medication and most abortion procedures unconstitutional, adding further complexity to the ongoing legislative struggle over reproductive rights.

While proponents argue that these measures are necessary for patient safety, critics, including Rep. Elissa Campbell, have labeled the bills as examples of government overreach and a violation of doctor-patient relationships. All three representatives from Teton County voted against HB 64, which passed with a 48-13 vote.

Additionally, another bill, HB 159, which holds drug manufacturers accountable for traces of abortion medications found in water and mandates the return of fetal tissue for disposal, is also on the agenda to be debated.

These bills will now be forwarded to the Senate, where their fate will be determined, potentially aligning with ongoing national debates around abortion rights.
