North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of short-range ballistic missile systems simulating nuclear counterstrikes against U.S. and South Korean forces, according to state media reports. The tests occurred amid rising tensions attributed to joint military exercises by the U.S. and its allies. South Korean military observers discovered multiple missile launches from North Korea’s eastern coast, which they suspect may be linked to the North’s arms exports to Russia during the Ukraine conflict.
The missile tests, reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), featured a mobile ballistic missile system likely modeled after Russia’s Iskander, along with 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers categorized as ballistic weapons for their guided, self-propelling capabilities. These weapons are part of North Korea’s arsenal capable of carrying “tactical” nuclear warheads.
KCNA highlighted that the exercises were intended to enhance the operational readiness of missile systems and ensure timely responses during potential nuclear crises. Kim Jong Un criticized the U.S. and allied nations for escalating military collaboration, claiming their actions were akin to preparations for nuclear warfare. He emphasized the importance of strengthening nuclear capabilities for both deterrence and combat readiness.
In response, South Korea’s Unification Ministry labeled the missile tests a “clear act of provocation” that contravenes U.N. Security Council resolutions and represents a serious threat to regional peace. The Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea confirmed that missiles launched from Wonsan traveled approximately 500 miles, and Japanese officials reported that none of the missiles entered Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
This launch marks North Korea’s first documented ballistic activity since March, amidst escalating tensions and military developments in the Korean Peninsula.
