Wyoming Football Prepares for ‘Super Combat Saturday’

LARAMIE – In a highly anticipated spring football practice, Wyoming’s Jay Sawvel has dubbed it "Super Combat Saturday." The event, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and open to the public, will feature a unique contest: the offense, lacking wide receivers, will aim to advance the ball 10 yards in three runs from the 20-yard line, while the defense will attempt to stop them within the same limit. The losing side will face running punishments.

Excitement is palpable among the players, particularly redshirt freshman running back Nico Hamilton, who eagerly anticipates the physicality of the showdown. "I love hitting," he stated, reflecting on his high school success at Texas’ Lake Travis High School where he rushed for over 3,300 yards and scored 29 touchdowns.

With top returning rusher Sam Scott sidelined this spring, Hamilton is seizing the opportunity for increased playing time. He indicated that his previous season of limited action fueled his determination to earn a spot in the rotation.

Alongside Hamilton, fellow redshirt freshman Dontae Burch has also made notable strides in spring training. Sawvel expressed optimism about this position, highlighting a need for depth.

Additionally, Terron Kellman, a Charlotte transfer and the most experienced back available, has been working hard, gaining weight and strength since joining the team. Kellman underscored his commitment to maximizing his contributions and maintaining a positive attitude, emphasizing the importance of showing versatility as a complete running back.

Looking ahead, Wyoming plans to bolster its running back lineup with three incoming recruits and another transfer, setting the stage for dynamic competition this coming season. As Sawvel quipped, "We’re going to see somebody run through somebody’s face," signaling an exciting day ahead for Wyoming’s football program.
