Laramie Welcomes Candace Thornton as New Assistant Coach for Cowgirl Basketball

LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 18, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball program has welcomed Candace Thornton as its new assistant coach, announced Head Coach Heather Ezell. Thornton joins the Cowgirls after a successful three seasons at Utah Tech, where she specialized in coaching guards and directed the university’s summer camps.

Before her tenure at Utah Tech, Thornton served as an assistant coach at the College of Idaho and gained significant experience as the head coach at Centennial High School. During her six seasons at Centennial, she led the team to a remarkable Idaho 5A State Championship and earned the title of 5A State Coach of the Year in 2017.

In addition to her high school achievements, Thornton is a prominent figure in youth basketball, having founded and co-presided over the Tree of Hope club team, part of the prestigious Nike EYBL Circuit. Her dedication to developing young talent saw her coach at Tree of Hope from 2013 to 2022, culminating in her role as the 17U National Head Coach.

Thornton had a noteworthy collegiate basketball career, initially playing for Northern Colorado before concluding her journey at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), where she graduated in 2008 with a degree in communications. She further enhanced her credentials with a master’s in organizational leadership from Colorado State in 2013.

A dedicated family woman, Thornton resides with her husband, Eli, and their five children—Sophie, Elin, Sylvie, Dean, and Navi.

Ezell emphasized the excitement surrounding Thornton’s addition, highlighting her extensive coaching experience and commitment to player development as key assets to the Cowgirls’ future success.
