Gray Calls for Removal of Weston County Clerk Over False Post-Election Audit Claims | Local News

Secretary of State Recommends Removal of Weston County Clerk Amid Election Misconduct

NEWCASTLE – A significant shake-up in Weston County’s electoral management is underway as Secretary of State Chuck Gray has officially recommended the removal of County Clerk Becky Hadlock, citing "misconduct or malfeasance" during the contentious 2024 election cycle.

In a recent press conference, Gray detailed findings conveyed to Governor Mark Gordon, emphasizing a pattern of incompetence and neglect in Hadlock’s duties that raises serious concerns. Notably, Gray accused Hadlock of filing a false post-election audit in violation of Wyoming law, a move he deemed a felony.

Gray’s nine-page letter, supported by over 80 pages of attachments, outlines troubling discrepancies in election results, particularly surrounding the votes for Rep. Chip Neiman. Hadlock originally reported that Neiman received 166 votes, with an inexplicable 1,289 undervotes; post-recount, his actual total surged to 1,268 votes.

Further investigative findings revealed that Hadlock improperly used multiple ballots and failed to adhere to the mandated protocols for ballot printing and election worker training. Reports indicated a critical lack of oversight in machine testing, resulting in failures that necessitated retests close to election deadlines, compounded by Hadlock’s inadequate communication with the public and election officials.

Following the announcement, Commission Chair Nathan Todd expressed support for Hadlock, suggesting patience and understanding is essential, while calling the Secretary’s actions premature.

Gray is advocating for removal proceedings to commence in district court, arguing Hadlock’s conduct not only undermines public trust but also reflects a broader issue of professional accountability within election officials. The governor’s review and potential next steps regarding Hadlock’s position remain pending.
