A recent analysis by OpenSecrets, a non-profit campaign finance tracking organization, reveals a striking trend in congressional fundraising, particularly in low-population states like Wyoming. The report highlights that a staggering 89% of House candidates’ funding and 92.5% of Senate candidates’ funding comes from out-of-state sources, marking one of the lowest proportions of in-state contributions in recent history.
Hilary Braseth, Executive Director of OpenSecrets, discussed this phenomenon with Wyoming Public Radio’s Jordan Uplinger, noting a steady decline in contributions from local constituents, with a historic low recorded in 2020 likely due to the pandemic. The influx of external funding raises questions about the influence of powerful organizations in local elections. For instance, Rep. Harriet Hageman received substantial donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, while Senator John Barrasso and Senator Cynthia Lummis also garnered significant funds from major firms and political action committees.
The reliance on out-of-state donations can be attributed to the unique political landscape of states like Wyoming, where fewer candidates compete for attention and funding. This dynamic may amplify the impact of large donations from entities far removed from local issues, raising concerns among residents about their representation.
Braseth emphasized the need for transparency in political funding, suggesting that informed voters can hold candidates accountable for their financial backers.
