Evan Eller Shifts Focus on Building Future Impact at Wyoming Football
LARAMIE, WY – Evan Eller, a graduate transfer from Virginia Military Institute, initially aimed for a short stint at Wyoming. After a productive 2023 season where he recorded 106 tackles as a hybrid "rover," Eller joined the Cowboys to occupy the middle linebacker position previously held by notable players like Logan Wilson and Chad Muma. However, after four games into his senior season, Eller decided to reevaluate his strategy.
Feeling a strong desire to contribute more significantly to the team, he approached head coach Jay Sawvel and defensive coordinator Aaron Bohl about redshirting to enhance his performance in 2025. "I just wanted to contribute as much as I could," Eller stated, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the team’s early-season performance.
Since joining UW, Eller has bulked up by 20 pounds, reaching 230 pounds, and is now more confident in his role. Coach Sawvel indicated that delaying Eller’s impact might benefit the program in the long run, stating, "He runs very well; he’s a smart football player."
The competition for playing time is fierce, with Eller contending against Ethan Stuhlsatz, another graduate transfer, while promising redshirt freshmen like Dash Bauman and Gary Rutherford are also stepping up. The team’s ethos emphasizes pushing each other to excel, as highlighted by Rutherford’s performance in recent scrimmages.
Eller, fully committed to making the most of his extended time at Wyoming, expresses a newfound focus on making impactful plays rather than merely avoiding mistakes. With fall camp ongoing, the Cowboys are looking to restore the defensive standards set by past stars.
