Wyoming Cowboys Welcome New Running Back Coach Gary Harrell
LARAMIE, Wyo. (April 8, 2025) – The University of Wyoming football program has bolstered its coaching staff with the addition of Gary Harrell as the new running back coach. Head coach Jay Sawvel made the announcement on Tuesday, expressing enthusiasm for Harrell’s extensive coaching background and his experience as a player.
Harrell joins the Cowboys after a successful stint at the University of Colorado, where he served as running back coach and played a key role in the team’s progression to the 2024 Alamo Bowl. His coaching career spans several prominent programs, including Jackson State and Alabama State, and includes time under Lane Kiffin at Florida Atlantic.
Known affectionately as "The Flea," Harrell is a Miami native and a Hall of Famer from Howard University, where he excelled as a wide receiver. After his collegiate career, he played in the NFL for the New York Giants, as well as in the World League and Canadian Football League, showcasing his versatile athletic talents.
Harrell expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Cowboys, highlighting the positive atmosphere of the program and his eagerness to contribute his energy to the team. He aims to foster academic and athletic growth among the young athletes at Wyoming, drawing on his philosophy that both aspects are equally important.
During his five years as head coach at Howard, Harrell garnered accolades, including recognition from the D.C. Touchdown Club as Local College Coach of the Year. He holds the record for the most receptions in a game and career at Howard and was pivotal in winning a MEAC championship.
With a wealth of experience and a passion for the game, Gary Harrell is poised to make a significant impact on the Wyoming Cowboys football program.
