The Morning-After Pill: Soon Available at Your Local Convenience Store

Why 24-Hour Access Matters to Reproductive Health

Access to birth control has improved recently with products like Opill, the first non-prescription birth control pill in the U.S., and innovations such as long-acting implants and hormone-free options like Phexxi. Despite these advancements, many women remain unaware that emergency contraception (EC) is available over the counter. A KFF poll revealed that half of women in states with abortion bans mistakenly believe that EC is illegal, highlighting a significant informational gap.

Younger women are more likely to use emergency contraceptives, with around 44% of those aged 15-24 having utilized them. This trend is reflected in late-night online searches for EC, often indicative of urgent needs. Cost remains a barrier, with products like Plan B priced at about $50, creating accessibility challenges, especially for low-income women. Condoms are inexpensive but often fall outside women’s control, perpetuating inequities in reproductive health affordability.

Dr. Amanda Bryson emphasizes the challenges faced by adolescents and young adults in accessing EC, including confidentiality concerns and lack of transportation or insurance. Even when available, EC is sometimes stored behind counters or in lockboxes, making it harder to obtain. In rural areas, access can be even more limited, as seen in cases where patients struggle to find stocked pharmacies.

Cadence, a supplier of emergency contraception, proposes expanding availability in convenience stores and potentially through vending machines on college campuses. This would increase visibility and reduce stigma, making access to contraceptive options easier. While mainstream retailers often stock EC, some may hesitate due to personal beliefs despite recognizing customer demand. Improving 24-hour access and availability of affordable options is critical for empowering women to manage their reproductive health effectively.
