Wyoming Cowboys Football Welcomes Nearly 50 New Players Amid Offseason Rebuild
LARAMIE, WY – The University of Wyoming football program is undergoing significant changes this offseason, welcoming almost 50 new players, primarily through the transfer portal. Head Coach Jay Sawvel, now in his second year, identified an urgent need to revamp the defense after losing key positions, including both starting linebackers and safeties, as well as influential leaders like Jordan Bertagnole and DeVonne Harris.
In light of these departures, Sawvel has successfully signed a dozen defensive transfers during February’s traditional signing day, with three additional players joining after the spring game.
On the offensive side, while some talent has departed, with running back Harrison Waylee transferring to Virginia and wide receiver Justin Stevenson moving to Utah, Sawvel has managed to retain essential players. Quarterback Kaden Anderson and three of the Cowboys’ top offensive linemen—Jack Walsh, Caden Barnett, and Wes King—are set to return, along with star tight end John Michael Gyllenborg and leading rusher Sam Scott.
As the summer approaches, the focus turns to integrating new talent, including junior wide receiver Eric Richardson from Northwest Missouri State. Richardson is expected to make an impact, coming off a season where he recorded 25 receptions for 411 yards and six touchdowns, though he missed the spring due to a torn pectoral muscle.
Sawvel remains optimistic about his team’s dynamics and the wide receiver lineup, which includes promising talents like Jaylan Bean and Bricen Brantley. “I think you see what Deion DeBlanc can do with the ball in his hands. Even without Richardson this spring, we have speed and depth,” said Sawvel.
As Wyoming prepares for the upcoming season, excitement builds around the refreshed roster and the potential it holds for success on the field.
