Introducing Wyoming Football: Jason Handy Takes the Lead

Wyoming Football Welcomes 50 New Faces Amid Offseason Rebuild

LARAMIE – The University of Wyoming football program has undergone a significant transformation this offseason, welcoming nearly 50 new players, largely through the transfer portal. Head coach Jay Sawvel recognized the urgent need for a defensive overhaul after losing key contributors, including both starting linebackers and safeties, along with leaders like Jordan Bertagnole and DeVonne Harris.

In his second year, Sawvel proactively signed a dozen defensive transfers on traditional signing day, with three additional players joining after the spring game. On the offensive side, the roster was less impacted, retaining crucial talent such as quarterback Kaden Anderson and linemen Jack Walsh, Caden Barnett, and Wes King. While running back Harrison Waylee transferred to Virginia and wide receiver Justin Stevenson to Utah, the core offensive lineup remains largely intact with leading rusher Sam Scott and tight end John Michael Gyllenborg staying put.

Among the new recruits, defensive end Jason Handy stands out. A freshman from Cedar Park, Texas, Handy boasts an impressive high school record, having registered 10 sacks and three forced fumbles in his senior season. Sawvel praised Handy’s athleticism and potential, hinting at his versatility, including the possibility of competing for the long-snapper position.

As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, the focus will be on integrating these new athletes into the team dynamic. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this revamped roster will perform as they look to reshape Wyoming football.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Cowboys and their new recruits as the summer unfolds.
