Welcome to Wyoming Football: Featuring Brooklyn Cheek

Wyoming Cowboys Football Welcomes Nearly 50 New Faces This Offseason

LARAMIE, WY — The University of Wyoming football team is undergoing a significant transformation this offseason, welcoming nearly 50 new players, largely due to the transfer portal’s impact. Head coach Jay Sawvel, now in his second year, recognized the need for a defensive overhaul after losing critical starters, including linebackers and safeties.

In February, Sawvel focused on shoring up the defense, securing a dozen transfers on National Signing Day and three additional players following the spring game. Key departures, including Wrook Brown and DeVonne Harris, intensified the urgency for reinforcements on that side of the ball.

Offensively, the losses have been more manageable. While running back Harrison Waylee has moved to Virginia and wide receiver Justin Stevenson is now a Ute, Sawvel is pleased to retain key players such as quarterback Kaden Anderson, alongside top linemen Jack Walsh, Caden Barnett, and Wes King. Notably, tight end John Michael Gyllenborg and leading rusher Sam Scott also remain with the team.

Among the notable newcomers is safety Brooklyn Cheek, a redshirt freshman from Oakdale, California. Ranked as the No. 39 safety in the nation by 247Sports, Cheek boasts impressive high school stats, including 152 tackles and nine interceptions. “He’s very athletic,” Sawvel enthused, highlighting Cheek’s growth and potential for serious playing time.

As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, the excitement is palpable. The coaching staff is optimistic that these new additions will elevate the team’s performance, with strong emphasis on the vital rebuild of the defensive unit. Wyoming fans can look forward to an engaging summer as new players take center stage in preparation for fall competition.

Stay tuned for more updates on Wyoming football as the team continues its quest for excellence.
