Press Release: Groundbreaking Guideline Prioritizes Lifestyle Changes in Diabetes Care
The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) has unveiled its first-ever clinical practice guideline focusing on lifestyle interventions for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes management. Titled "Lifestyle Interventions for Treatment and Remission of Type 2 Diabetes and Prediabetes in Adults," the guideline emphasizes the integration of therapeutic lifestyle behaviors into standard care, enhancing existing diabetes management protocols.
With over half of U.S. adults affected by diabetes or prediabetes—contributing to a staggering $413 billion in healthcare costs—the guideline aims to empower clinicians with actionable strategies for lifestyle modification. It highlights the importance of assessing patients’ baseline habits, readiness to change, and offers a framework for medication reduction after successful lifestyle changes.
Developed collaboratively by experts across various medical disciplines, the guideline includes 25 informational handouts to assist healthcare providers and patients in adopting lifestyle medicine approaches. It outlines six pillars of lifestyle medicine, including plant-predominant nutrition and stress management, as critical components of diabetes care.
Endorsed by multiple leading organizations, including the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the guideline serves to complement existing diabetes strategies while providing a comprehensive blueprint for fostering sustainable lifestyle changes. These measures aim to improve glycemic management and potentially reverse the progression of diabetes.
"This publication is a milestone in diabetes care," said Dr. Mahima Gulati, a guideline author. "It elevates lifestyle behavior interventions from peripheral recommendations to central roles in treatment. This is a transformative moment for those managing chronic diseases."
The new guideline is set to reshape diabetes care by prioritizing lifestyle changes as a key treatment component, pushing forward the battle against one of the 21st century’s most severe health challenges.
