Wyoming Football Welcomes Fresh Talent Amid Offseason Rebuild
LARAMIE, WY – The University of Wyoming Cowboys football team is gearing up for a transformative season, having welcomed nearly 50 new players this offseason as part of a significant roster overhaul.
Head coach Jay Sawvel, in his second year, recognized the urgent need to rebuild the defense after losing key players like linebackers Jordan Bertagnole and DeVonne Harris, and several others. To address this, he secured a total of 15 transfers, focusing primarily on bolstering the defensive lineup, including a dozen new players on signing day.
While the offense faced fewer departures, with notable losses including running back Harrison Waylee and young wideout Justin Stevenson, Sawvel managed to retain pivotal offensive players. Quarterback Kaden Anderson and three of the top offensive linemen—Jack Walsh, Caden Barnett, and Wes King—remain with the team, alongside tight end John Michael Gyllenborg and leading rusher Sam Scott.
Among the new recruits is sophomore offensive tackle Josiah Petaia from Long Beach City College, who didn’t play football in high school. After a year spent learning the game, he started all 11 games last fall and earned First Team All-Conference honors. Petaia expressed excitement about joining Wyoming, citing the program’s fit for his academics and the welcoming culture he experienced during his visit.
As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, they will be introducing numerous new faces, including Esaia Bogar, Eric Richardson, and Jason Handy, as they look to overcome offseason challenges and build a strong team dynamic.
