Fashion Icons to Be Featured in Upcoming High-Profile Auctions
Fashion enthusiasts are in for a treat with two major auctions on the horizon. Julien’s Auctions will feature a stunning collection of late Princess Diana’s clothing and accessories on June 26, while Sotheby’s is set to auction Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin bag in Paris on July 10.
The auction titled "Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection" includes over 100 items celebrating Diana’s influential fashion legacy. Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, emphasized the uniqueness of this auction, noting it is the largest such collection of Diana’s items since more than 70 dresses were sold for charity in 1997. Among the highlights are a 1988 silk floral "caring dress," estimated at $200,000-$300,000, and a cream silk evening gown by Catherine Walker from Diana’s 1986 Gulf tour, also valued similarly. Other notable pieces include a Dior handbag from former French first lady Bernadette Chirac and a sketch of Diana’s iconic wedding dress.
In a separate auction, the original Birkin bag—created for Jane Birkin by Hermès over 40 years ago—will be sold by Sotheby’s. Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags, described the bag as an "irreplaceable piece of fashion history" that has evolved into a luxury icon. The black leather prototype first exhibited last year has attracted significant attention.
Both auctions not only represent a blend of fashion history and celebrity culture but also could serve as valuable investments, as high-profile fashion pieces continue to fetch impressive sums. Proceeds from the sale of Diana’s items will benefit Muscular Dystrophy UK, underscoring the lasting impact of these legendary figures.
