University of Wyoming Mourns the Passing of Legendary Coach Paul Roach
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The University of Wyoming Athletics Department is mourning the loss of Paul Roach, a distinguished football coach and Athletic Director, who passed away at the age of 95. Roach made history by being the only individual to simultaneously hold the positions of head football coach and Athletic Director at the university, serving in both roles from 1987 to 1996.
During his tenure as head coach from 1987 to 1990, Roach led the Wyoming Cowboys to remarkable success, securing Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships in 1987 and 1988. Under his leadership, the team achieved impressive records of 10-3 and 11-2, boasting an undefeated conference record during those seasons. His outstanding performance earned him the title of WAC Coach of the Year in both years, capping off his coaching career with an overall record of 35-15.
Roach’s coaching journey began in 1952 at Hettinger High School in North Dakota. He subsequently served as an assistant coach at the University of Wyoming from 1962 to 1969, before moving on to prominent roles in the NFL, coaching for the Oakland Raiders, Green Bay Packers, and Denver Broncos throughout the 1970s. His contributions to the sport were recognized in October 1999 when he was inducted into the University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame.
Roach leaves behind a legacy of excellence in collegiate athletics, and his impact on the University of Wyoming will be felt by players, staff, and fans for generations to come. His dedication to the game and the university was unparalleled, making him a beloved figure in Wyoming’s sports history.
