Thrilling Matches at African Knockout Championship Ignite MMA Passion in Lagos
Lagos, Nigeria – The African Knockout Championship (AKO) transformed the packed arena in Lekki into a vibrant showcase of talent and excitement last Friday, as 18 fighters from eight African nations battled before a roaring crowd. This ninth installment of the championship, a reality television show turned official league, captivated thousands of mixed martial arts (MMA) fans, reflecting a growing interest in the sport across Nigeria and beyond.
Since its inception in 2020, AKO has evolved into a premier platform for showcasing African talent. Hosted in various locations, the formal championship began in May 2023 and has attracted participants from 18 countries. Chief Operating Officer Ryan Fayad emphasized the need for an African-centric platform where local talent can shine on the international stage, inspired by the success of UFC champions Israel Adesanya and Kamaru Usman.
The night’s main event featured a thrilling lightweight clash between Jean Do Santos from Benin and Nigeria’s Emmanuel Nworie, alongside several compelling matches including Cameroonian Styve Essono’s win over Nigeria’s Damilare Abdulrahim. Fighters like 28-year-old kickboxer Jibrin Inuwa Baba highlighted the championship’s focus on passion rather than profit.
Despite significant progress, challenges remain, including a lack of infrastructure and bureaucratic hurdles regarding visas for international competitors. Fayad called for greater institutional support to improve conditions for fighters and fans alike. With the local MMA scene gaining momentum, the AKO is committed to nurturing the next generation of champions while bringing African combat sports to the world’s forefront.
“People are here for the good fights,” said Lois Ogunniyi, a local media executive, reflecting the event’s appeal beyond national loyalties. The burgeoning interest suggests a promising future for MMA in Nigeria and across the continent.
