Local Resident Triumphs at Wyoming Senior Olympics
Sheridan’s own Mark Engelman has made waves at the Wyoming Senior Olympics, clinching an impressive seven gold medals in swimming. The 67-year-old athlete showcased his skills at the recent event held in Cheyenne, demonstrating that age is no barrier to achievement in sports.
Engelman’s journey in competitive swimming began relatively late, at the age of 50. Reflecting on his first experience at the games in 2007, he recalls the humbling realization that competing against seasoned seniors was far more challenging than he anticipated. "I thought I could rewrite the record books, but quickly found out I couldn’t," Engelman said. He humorously added, “I was beaten by a guy who was 20 years older than me, and I’d love to return that favor someday.”
Despite a brief stint swimming in high school, Engelman’s true motivation to dive back into the sport came from the Senior Olympics. For him, the competition represents more than just winning. "It’s more of a celebration of life for me," he explains. His involvement in the games served as a catalyst for significant personal change; he successfully quit smoking in 2008, attributing his healthier lifestyle to his newfound passion for swimming.
Engelman, who has resided in Sheridan since 1980, continues to inspire others with his dedication and spirit. His remarkable achievements at the Wyoming Senior Olympics highlight not just his talent in the pool, but also the transformative power of sport at any age.
