California Official Under Fire for Suggesting Gangs Should Intervene in Immigration Raids

Cynthia Gonzalez, the vice mayor of Cudahy, California, is under scrutiny after a controversial social media video, now deleted, in which she seemingly urged local street gangs to confront federal immigration enforcement. She criticized well-known gangs, such as “18th Street” and “Florence,” for their silence regarding increased immigration raids in Los Angeles, stating, “You guys tag everything up, claiming hood” but are “not a peep” when federal agents invade. Gonzalez highlighted that ordinary citizens were the ones actively protesting against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Department of Homeland Security condemned her remarks as “despicable,” asserting that they could incite violence against federal officers, emphasizing that assaults on them would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The police union, the Los Angeles Police Protective League, called for Gonzalez’s resignation, labeling her comments “deplorable and potentially illegal.”

Amidst President Trump’s administration ramping up immigration arrests and deploying the National Guard to protect federal operations, Gonzalez’s remarks starkly contrast with those of California officials, like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who advocate for peaceful protest.

Gonzalez, who has a background in education and a personal history tied to immigrant parents, has been on a leave of absence from the Los Angeles Unified School District since June 2025. The city of Cudahy distanced itself from her comments, stating they do not reflect its official position. Cudahy, a predominantly Hispanic city with a population of about 22,000, has largely stayed silent on further developments regarding Gonzalez’s situation. No comment has been made on whether she is under investigation.
