The Early 1920s: The Ku Klux Klan’s Infiltration of Wyoming and the State’s Resilient Response

The Rise and Influence of the Ku Klux Klan in Wyoming: A Historical Overview

A century ago, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was aggressively expanding across the United States, including Wyoming. The organization, notorious for its racist ideologies targeting Blacks, Jews, and Catholics, experienced a resurgence during the early 20th century, aided by D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film “The Birth of a Nation,” which romanticized the Klan as defenders of American values.

In 1921, the Casper Daily Tribune prominently announced the establishment of a Klan chapter in Casper, claiming it included influential local residents. The Klan’s reach extended to other communities, with reports of organized activities in Douglas and Riverton. During this time, the Klan adopted a “law-and-order” appeal to obscure its racial prejudices, trying to position itself as a protector of morality amid the region’s vices.

Historian Bob David recounted his experiences, stating that the Klan attempted to recruit him due to his local influence. He famously resisted their advances, highlighting their attempts to intimidate opponents. Despite local recruitment efforts, there was significant opposition, especially from the Catholic community, with events such as Klan exposés and infiltration by organizations like the American Unity League.

By the mid-1920s, national scandals involving Klan leaders began to tarnish its reputation, contributing to a decline in its activities, especially in Wyoming. As the 1930s approached, the Klan’s presence dwindled, becoming a politically charged topic. The legacy of the Klan in Wyoming serves as a stark reminder of the complex interplay between racism, community dynamics, and collective resistance in American history.
