Cheyenne East High School athletics director Jerry Schlabs recently shared a heartwarming story about football commit Drew Jackson’s childhood during a celebration honoring Jackson’s commitment to play for the University of Wyoming as a preferred walk-on. The story highlighted how Jackson’s competitiveness was fueled by intense backyard basketball games with Schlabs’ son, Garet, and Jackson’s sister, Maeci, who didn’t go easy on the boys.
Growing up next door to the Schlabs family, Jackson spent a lot of time playing sports with Garet, which helped shape his competitive nature and work ethic. The intense competitions in their backyard laid the foundation for Jackson to become one of the state’s top all-around high school athletes.
As a senior, Jackson excelled in football and basketball, earning recognition on the Class 4A all-state teams for both sports. His impressive stats and defensive skills made him a standout player and ultimately led to him being named WyoSports’ Laramie County Male Prep Athlete of the Year.
Jackson credits his success to the constant competition and support he received from his family and neighbors like the Schlabs. Despite facing injuries during his senior year, Jackson continued to excel on the field and court, showcasing his versatility and determination.
Jackson’s coaches and teammates praised his work ethic, defensive prowess, and ability to excel in multiple positions on the football field and basketball court. Looking ahead to his collegiate career at the University of Wyoming, Jackson’s dedication and competitive spirit are sure to make him a valuable asset to the Cowboys’ athletic program.
