French elections: Who voted for each political party?

The first round of snap legislative elections in France saw high turnout and a record result for the far-right National Rally (RN). The RN clinched 33% of the vote, potentially dominating the National Assembly. The New Popular Front (NFP) came in second with 29% while President Macron’s centrist coalition came in third.

An Ipsos survey broke down the demographics of the vote, revealing that the RN won in all age groups except those under 34 and over 70. Young people primarily voted for the NFP. The RN also secured the majority of votes from those who identified as disadvantaged or part of the working class, tapping into dissatisfaction with traditional left-wing parties.

The survey also revealed that voters unhappy with Macron or the current government split their votes between the NFP and RN, with the RN serving as a tool for both protest and ideological adherence.

Experts suggest that the RN’s success can be attributed to their focus on issues that resonate with voters such as purchasing power and security. Macron’s policies, seen as a continuation of previous governments, have led to a shift in the left-wing electorate’s support towards the RN.

The survey highlights a complex political landscape in France with voters choosing between different parties based on age, socioeconomic status, and dissatisfaction with the current government. The upcoming second round of elections will be crucial in determining the new composition of the National Assembly.
