In a groundbreaking operation, members of the Wyoming Air National Guard’s 187th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron successfully evacuated a civilian contractor suffering from a massive heart attack from McMurdo Station in Antarctica. The patient, a veteran of Operation Deep Freeze, collapsed in the station’s galley and was found in cardiac arrest. Despite harsh weather conditions and previous rescue attempts being thwarted by blizzards, a team of medical professionals worked tirelessly to stabilize the patient and plan for immediate evacuation.
Maj. Nate Krueger and Master Sgt. Lyndsey Glotfelty led the patient’s stabilization and transport efforts, which involved a risky airlift to Christchurch, New Zealand, spanning over 2,500 miles and lasting seven hours in an unforgiving terrain. The patient received life-saving treatment, including the placement of two stents, within 12 hours of the collapse and was able to walk out of the hospital days later.
The success of this mission highlights the importance of cooperation between the military and the National Science Foundation in Antarctica, showcasing the readiness and training necessary for emergency responses in remote locations. Brig. Gen. Michelle Mulberry praised the Airmen for their extraordinary efforts in saving a life under challenging circumstances.
